Wellness Committee Advances Summit's Healthy Environment

Flu_ShotAs noted in previous blogs on committees, a lot of Summit's cultural offerings are shifting to being driven more by staff, which helps our administrative team concentrate on day-to-day duties that keep the office running. This may be most evident with wellness initiatives: we now have a team of staff members brainstorming and coordinating events and policies to help improve the overall health of Summit.

The Wellness Committee first met in August and created a long list of wellness initiatives. In the six months since founding, the Committee has been very busy. We conducted a staff survey to choose the most ergonomic office chairs for our new office, arranged on-site flu shots (as Jacob demonstrates in the picture to the right), petitioned for semiweekly fruit deliveries on top of other snack reforms, and organized seasonal sports leagues. Given that the new year is upon us, however, the Committee has put together some “Wellness Resolutions” to help staff stay well in 2015.

Our first major resolution is to promote a series of races and other wellness events to staff in the coming year. Our goal is to get at least 10 Summiteers to participate in each event. The first event is the Rock’n’Roll DC 5K, scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 14, 2015. Staff will not only have a chance to get fit, but can also participate in a little “healthy” competition, as well as the requisite pre- and post-race group photo (arguably the most important part).

In addition to races, we’re looking into organizing hiking weekends, yoga classes, daily meditation hour, and collaborating with the Social Committee on a Summit Field Day for staff and their families.

It’s chalking up to be a busy 2015 as well for the Wellness Committee, and we’ll make sure to update you on our progress in the new year.
