Summer Analyst Program Reflections, Part IV: Brian Batten

Summer Analyst Brian Batten’s time in the office was often consumed by his work on one of our most complex engagements, but that didn’t limit his enjoyment of the program and new city this summer. Below, he provides a summary of his experiences.

“I didn’t know what to expect when it came to working at Summit,” Brian said, “I knew it would be fast-paced and challenging.” His assumption was correct, especially because Brian was also given an opportunity that many Analysts don’t get: to engage with clients in multiple cities. As part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund Bond Guarantee (BG) Program engagement, which required site visits around the country, Brian got to travel this summer on business. “Traveling with the client was a great experience; we got to see these cities while working to evaluate the stability of institutions seeking loans through the BG Program. It was a nice way to work.”

Brian’s supervisor and mentor, Jill Cochones, worked closely with him and helped him feel welcome to the office. He noted that Summit’s social events were a nice way to relax and get to know everyone as well. When it came to getting more comfortable with clients, Brian reported that “working with the team and engaging with clients became easier as the summer went on.”

In terms of his new surroundings, Brian took in the city’s many neighborhoods and restaurant options. He enjoyed the small city feel of Washington, DC, which reminded him a bit of Evanston, IL, where he attends Northwestern University. “There’s a lot to do in such a small area. I really enjoyed that.”

We’re happy to have had Brian on our team this summer!
