Dr. Layne to Present at APPAM Fall Research Conference

Dr. China Layne has been invited to present her research at the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) 2014 Fall Research Conference. Her research is entitled “Working but Still Poor: The Role of Regional Occupational Structure in Low Income Work” and was accepted to be presented at the conference, being held in November in Albuquerque, NM.

Dr. Layne examined whether regional factors affect an individual’s likelihood of being “working poor,” that is, employed, but earning a poverty level wage. Specifically, the research focuses on how the mix of occupations within a region affects the probability of workers earning very low wages. Dr. Layne’s project used data from the American Community Survey and employed a two-level logistic model to investigate the effects of both individual- and regional-level characteristics on the likelihood of being working poor.

The APPAM is an annual conference that invites a variety of researchers to discuss current and emerging issues in policy and management. Dr. Layne previously presented this work at the Eastern Sociological Society’s Annual Conference.
