Summit Partners with Johns Hopkins for Online Course

Summit is proud to announce a partnership with Johns Hopkins University in sponsoring an online course on data science. In conjunction with the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and JHU Data Science Specialization, Summit will mentor students in analyzing large amounts of data as part of the offering, hosted by Coursera.

Our team has been coordinating with Dr. Roger Peng, Dr. Jeff Leek, and Dr. Brian Caffo to shape the course into a practical curriculum that teaches students the skills needed to successfully complete a capstone project in data science. Summit was integral in brainstorming the data for the course. Possible data sets included healthcare insurance claims and a database of consumer-related benefits complaints, but the team ultimately chose the Common Core of Data database from the National Center of Education Statistics.

Summit’s Dr. Shane Thompson will serve as a co-instructor for the course. Dr. Thompson has research experience in the areas of economics and education, specifically the implications of K-12 production on labor markets. His familiarity with the data set and experience teaching college-level courses will provide the students with valuable guidance.

As part of this team, we are very eager to see what insights students can yield from the analytical skills they learn in this course.
