Summer Analyst Program Reflections, Part V: Shane Roberts

UCLA student Shane Roberts recently joined Summit as a part of the Summer Analyst Program. He took time to share his experiences and impressions on the professional application of academic skills.

Shane provided support to one of Summit’s newer engagements with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, providing actuarial review for the Federal Housing Agency’s Mutual Mortgage Insurance Fund. “I provided data analysis and programming for the project. It was simultaneously my favorite and most challenging task. I hadn't used Stata before this summer, although I had taken a class on programming languages and knew how to recognize it.”

The complexity of the MMIF engagement requires frequent communication with team members, which Shane said was aided by Summit’s open floor plan. “I liked the openness of the office. I was able to talk to those around me during the day and collaborate with my team.” Construction is currently underway in the office next door, to prepare for Summit’s expansion this fall.

Shane was one of the last Analysts to arrive at our offices, and he said he wished he had more time to settle into his role before heading back to school. “Some of my classmates said that their internships just involved them working with their immediate supervisor. But at Summit, I was able to work with people on all levels, both internally and on the client side. I thought that was a nice opportunity, which is rarer than I thought.”

Thanks for all your hard work this summer, Shane!
