Spotlight: Summit's Engagement with the HOPWA Program

In September 2012, Summit was awarded an opportunity to provide programmatic support for two offices within the Community Planning and Development (CPD) branch of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These offices administer programs to help under-served individuals obtain housing they otherwise might not be able to afford. One of those programs is entitled Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA).

HOPWA awards grants to help owners and developers to supplement the costs of purchasing, updating, or building housing units for people with HIV/AIDS. Additionally, HOPWA funds are used for support services, such as social services, program planning, health care services, and short-term rental payments to prevent homelessness. The grants are awarded through three methods: a competitive program, formula program, and a technical assistance program.

The Office of HIV/AIDS Housing, which administers the HOPWA program, works collaboratively with 44 state and area offices to provide oversight and administer the grants. Corey West, Summit’s engagement leader for the CPD project, stated that Summit’s work in “continuing to ensure that those in need of suitable housing will have a place to stay” is a source of professional fulfillment on the engagement.
